Roadfood.com readers pick up their eating tips from a wide range of sources, according to last week’s poll.  The hotel/motel desk clerk was named most often, but policemen and truck drivers are also popular sources for the inside info on good local eats.  Many readers also pointed out that bartenders (not one of the offered poll choices) can also often point you in the right direction.

I have had incredibly good luck with cab drivers and horrible luck with a hotel desk clerk. I visit a lot of hotels because I work in the industry, and 90% of the recommendations I receive are chain restaurants.

In the US and Canada, I ask cab drivers with heavy accents to recommend a restaurant that specializes in cuisine from their homeland. I have found some great hole-in-the-wall international eats that way. Cops are good for diners, and bikers usually know the best BBQ and chili. Bartenders are good for upscale eats.
