Does the Scottsdale Grimaldi's Measure Up to the Brooklyn Original?

We've been to both, and we prefer the Old Town Scottsdale Grimaldi (our Roadfood.com review) to the Brooklyn Grimaldi (Michael Stern's Roadfood.com review).  Heresy, perhaps, but tasting is proof (that's a Scottsdale pie pictured above).  At least it is for us.  Sandy Ikeda did a comparison of the two for The New York Sun, and while she gave a slight edge to the hometown favorite, she was surprised at how good the Scottsdale pizza is.  She thought the crisp and smoky crust tipped it in favor of Brooklyn.  We think just the reverse, that the crust is crisper and smokier in Scottsdale.  Another excuse to try them both again...

We have yet to visit the original Grimaldi's, but absolutely LOVED the pie in Scottsdale. It's hard to imagine how a pizza could get any better!

We've been to the Grimaldi's in Scottsdale and it was indeed good. They just opened in Dallas to good reviews and there is one opening just down the road from us in Allen, TX at the new Watter's Creek development. We're looking forward to its opening. So far, the best pizza we've had in the Metroplex is Olivella's in University Park, just across Hillcrest from SMU.

and yet the brooklyn grimaldi's pales in comparison to what it once was, back when patsy grimaldi owned the place and was there every night watching the proceedings. the scottsdale pie in that picture above looks way better than any pie i've had at the brooklyn location in the past few years...

ayersian, you've had a Pepe's white clam. You don't have to imagine how a pizza gets any better.

Mmmhmm, Patsy Grimaldi isn't really connected to these pizzerias any longer. The same family owns the Brooklyn and Arizona stores, but the sons are running Arizona. Are the ones Jim Hainer mentions in Texas part of the same group, or are they unrelated? We don't know.
