Arkansas Times’ current issue features the annual Best of Arkansas results. The readers’ choices are mostly the usual collection of chains, but the accompanying staff picks offer a couple of great-sounding possibilities: smoked turkey salad (“like the best ham salad you ever ate”) from Burge’s in Little Rock, and elk jerky (“heartier and less gamey than . . . deer jerky”) from Ratchford Farms in Marshall. They also recommend two places already on the Roadfood.com radar: the Shaka Smoke Lodge in Little Rock for smoked ham (“They take a smoked Petit Jean ham, smoke it again and sell it for less than the supermarket chains sell their single-smoked ham.”) and War Eagle Mill in Rogers for their stone-ground pancake mix (“Not too sweet, with a deeper flavor than you'll find in a grocery-store mix”).
The pig-shaped sausage above is from Michael Stern’s Roadfood.com review of Shaka Smoke Lodge. The War Eagle Mill is listed on Roadfood.com as the Bean Palace, the name of their third floor cafe.
