Shea Stadium, home of the New York Mets, has never been a culinary wonderland. Mama’s of Corona is a lifesaver, serving up classic crusty-loaved Italian sandwiches based on Mama’s (Leo’s Latticini) superb fresh mozzarella. Beyond Mama’s, the Nathan’s hot dogs (skinless, alas) are pretty good, and… that’s about it for the good eats. Mets fans have been wondering what the food situation will be at the new Citi Field, to open next year. The first word is out, and it sounds very promising!
Florence Fabricant writes in the New York Times that Danny Meyer will have a strong presence in the new ballpark. He’ll be operating branches of his Manhattan hits Shake Shack (burgers and shakes) and Blue Smoke (barbecue) in Citi Field, along with a stand serving hand-cut Belgian-style fries. The article says other New York restaurants may open branches in Citi Field too. No word yet on whether or not Mama’s will make the move to the new stadium (please, Aramark, yes!).
