With summer in full swing, we have more time to visit our favorite haunts statewide for pizza, seafood, ice cream, and more. Without a doubt, New Haven is our favorite city to eat in Connecticut, boasting the most celebrated Roadfood establishments in the Nutmeg State. Ergo, it is fitting that our first chapter is State Street’s Modern Apizza, renowned for their chewy, blackened crust and lip-smacking toppings. During the second visit in one week, our group decided to maximize our sampling abilities by ordering three half-and-half pies for six different combinations. This half-pepperoni and sausage, half-pepperoni and sliced tomato pie was cooked to crispy perfection, with a well-done and bubbly crust that delighted everyone. Check back for more updates throughout the summer!

Chris, do you have a mental New Haven pizza ranking that you can share? Or is that coming? All this time, we've never been to Sally's, much as we'd love to, because we aren't in New Haven often enough to branch out. Pepe's white clam always beckons!

We thought the Modern was excellent, but not as good as Pepe's/The Spot. I can see, if we lived nearby, visiting Modern pretty regularly, though. Let's see... Modern Tuesdays, Pepe's Wednesdays, Sally's Thursdays, Pepe's again Fridays...

Sure, Bruce: Pepe's (#1), Modern (#2), Sally's (#3). This is slightly skewed because we frequent the Pepe's in Manchester, and we've only been to Sally's once or twice. Last year I ate at Pepe's with native New Haveners who said they'd never even think about eating at Sally's. There are definitely fierce allegiances in this town!

Sally's is next on our pizza docket, though, so stay tuned...

I hear the broccoli rabe pizza at Sally's is the thing...
