Summertime Eats in CT, Chapter 10

To use Roadfood forum lingo, I was Travelin’-Manned this morning. I forgot the cardinal RF rule: Always call ahead. Faced with a day of meetings in the office, I volunteered to bring my co-workers bounteous pastries from Neil’s Donut & Bake Shop in Yalesville. As I began to crest the hill on Route 150 and spied an empty parking lot, my heart sank in utter disappointment. My mind raced to remember what day it was; it was definitely not Monday, which is often a day of rest for many New England eateries. Then I read the huge sign in the window: Vacation. No wonderful raised donuts, no finger-licking cinnamon-sugar old-fashioneds, no jelly-filled wonders that give a wicked sugar rush. None for me today. But the re-opening date of August 5 is burned into my memory, and I shall return triumphantly for a box of Neil’s fantastic donuts.

We almost always call ahead before making a Roadfood visit. The key word there is almost, because it seems to me that when we are too lazy to call, or just forget, 9 times out of 10 the place is closed.

Too quickly did I forget about August vacations...and my mouth had been watering over Neil's donuts for two days beforehand! D'oh!
