With the disheartening demise of Elm City landmark Yankee Doodle, one might think that New Havenites have nowhere to go for excellent hot dogs. Formerly Joe’s Hubba Hubba, the Orangeside Luncheonette on Orange Street fills the void with sensational wieners and toppings. I ordered the Long Dog with chili and cheese, and I’m happy to report that the grainy chili is still lip-tingling hot, though not as spicy as Joe’s of yore—and certainly not even close to the fire-starting Kuhn’s chili in the area. The dog is split and grilled alongside the bun, and the succulent chili and gooey cheese are heaped on top. Regular or curly fries are separate, and, naturally, chili and cheese are available additions. Visit in the morning for scrumptious breakfast sandwiches (gyro meat is an option) on fresh ciabatta rolls.
