We’ve passed them by on I-95 in New Haven too many times to count, but today we stopped at the numerous taco trucks on Long Wharf Drive for lunch. After a brief chat with the Flag Man—who’s been a fixture here since 1991 (and drew the attention of the NY Times a few years ago)—we ordered our first taco of the day, Al Pastor (spicy pork), and an iced horchata (pictured above) from the Mexicali truck. Amy walked down to the Ixtapa #2 truck (choosing it over #1 and #3, which are evenly spaced between the other trucks) and ordered a taco de pollo. Still hungry, we ventured last to the Tacos Mexicanos Santa Apolonia truck for two tacos, Carne Enchilada and Al Pastor, the latter of which mixed pineapple chunks in with the spicy red marinade (pictured below). All trucks had large squeeze bottles of salsas red and green for extra heat. The best part: every taco (small corn tortilla piled high with meat and cilantro) was only $1, making for the cheapest and most filling lunch in town!

Nice report there! Really bums me out that on our part of this world, we have no taco trucks. After the taco blogs I read, it can really make one hungry for some of these cheap eats.

The last time I drove by here it was in torrential rain, I was so disappointed. I gotta get back down there and try these out and see if they stack up to my favorite tacos.

Thanks, everyone -- there's also a Puerto Rican food truck there that we didn't try...but summer's not over yet. New Haven seems to be choked by mediocre Mex places that cater to the margarita-swilling demographic, which makes these trucks such a godsend!
