Why Starbucks?

The recent news that Starbucks is closing 600 under-performing stores, and the thread about that news in the Roadfood.com Forums, got us thinking about how much we dislike chains, and yet how much we like Starbucks.  We recently got back from a 10 day trip to the Denver area. We must have visited a Starbucks about once or twice a day while we were there. Yes, even though there were plenty of good independent coffee shops to be found. Here's why, in decreasing order of importance:

1) Outside of the New York area, it's the only place you can count on finding a copy of The New York Times. Other than the big bookstore chains, everywhere else is hit or miss.

2) The bathrooms. Available without buying anything, clean and private.  If we’re in the car, we just use the GPS to search for the nearest Starbucks.

3) Good breakfast places often have lousy coffee (this was common in Denver). When that happens, we make a quick post-breakfast stop at Starbucks for the real thing. The Pike Place blend is a compromise but they often have something stronger on tap too. We have to admit we love the coffee.

4) Late afternoons we often recharge with either an Arnold Palmer or a Coffee Frappuccino. They just taste good and are incredibly refreshing.

All that despite the fact that we hate chains.

Bruce, shall I send you the Starbucks gift card that I just received? There is a shop half a block from my house, though I refuse to step foot in any of them!

I am glad you didn't mention anything about the pastries.

Starbucks pastries aren't one of their strengths. Except for the lemon pound cake slices, when they're fresh. And the Top Pot doughnuts, when they're fresh, too. But there's usually too many other good eating options to waste a snack at Starbucks.

Chris, why won't you go to Starbucks?

I, too, hate chains, and I try very hard to avoid them when possible. Since I'm not a coffee drinker, Starbucks is by far the easiest to avoid for me! And the only times we visit chains, it seems, are when we're traveling -- and usually because we have no better choices.

Bruce,

I heard you guys were in Denver when we were (Biker Jim told us)

I found two local coffee houses in Denver while we were out there- Peaberrys- a local chain was not too bad- somewhat corporate- and Common Grounds- two locations- which was outstanding- The cool thing about Peaberrys was the wording on the cupholders "Buy Colorado, it really pisses off Seattle"

Yes, we really should try to make more of an effort to go local with our coffee.

wanderingjew, we came thisclose to meeting you at Buckhorn Friday night, after Biker Jim told us of your plans. But, alas, we had flown into town a few hours earlier and were too exhausted to move.

Did you get a chance to sample Biker Jim's wares? Fantastic!

Yes it would have been great to have you and Sue join us, but I know galavanting around the country can get a little exhausting-I think I needed a vacation from my vacation when I returned home. Unfortunately we didn't get to try any of Biker Jim's exotic game sausages as we were so busy eating everything else in sight but found out he does make a mean latte.

I'll most likely be back in Denver next summer and will definetely not miss the opportunity.

Yeah, it's a little weird to see a defense of Starbucks on this site. I do understand your reasoning, though.

By the way, the ampersand makes clicking on your names to search for entries the two of you have written return as a bad request.
