Stop #5 was at Chocolaterie Stam to sample their locally-renowned bonbons. As a self-proclaimed dark chocolate snob (no milk, please), I selected half a pound worth of bonbons with a variety of creamy fillings (rum, Irish cream, butter, caramel, etc.). Although the cream fillings were decadently delicious, my favorite of the box was a dense marzipan, which brought back memories of visits to Europe and left my tastebuds yearning for more!

It looks like one of the pieces is shaped like a building. Is that the building Stam's in?

That's a good question, Bruce. The location I visited certainly didn't look like that, but they do have several stores around Des Moines. I'm guessing that it's just meant to look like a typical building in Amsterdam (which is where the family was from).

I like the shape though, Amy. You don't often see architecturally shaped chocolates. Sue loves European-style marzipan, too, by the way. We'll have to check on whether or not they ship.

The building shape is a traditional Dutch row house (they line the canals in Amsterdam). They absolutely ship. Anywhere in the world, as a matter of fact. If the chocolate is going to warmer climes they put it in a styrofoam box with an ice pack. Oh, and if you haven't tried their gelato, you're really missing something special. They give free samples of as many as you care to try, very cool.
