Into the 1950’s, they operated out of a shack made of soda crates.  Now they operate out of a real building across the street from that original shack.  This week, Simones’ Hot Dog Stand of Lewiston, Maine is celebrating their 100th anniversary with dollar specials and door prizes!  The celebration continues through tomorrow (Friday, 8/15).  Check out the NECN video of Simones.  Also see Carol Coultas’ story about Simones for The Sun Journal of Central Maine.

The sight of a Maine red dog can take some getting used to for first-timers.  Michael Stern, in his Roadfood.com review of Simones, says: “They are small, shockingly red weenies of the type typically served over in Rhode Island at “New York System” restaurants – steamed plump and nestled in tender split buns.”
