Part brick-oven pizzeria, part microbrewery, BAR wins the unofficial 4th place award in the New Haven-style apizza sweeps. Much like Pepe’s, Sally’s, and Modern, BAR makes excellent irregularly-shaped pies with sensational sauce, just enough cheese, and unusual (for New Haven) toppings like eggplant, mashed potatoes, hot cherry peppers, and artichoke hearts. Tucked in a former auto showroom on Crown Street—and across from the world famous Louis Lunch—BAR is open 365 days a year and is more attractive to locals and Yalies than the more touristy apizza triumvirate. My summer program rented one of their spacious rooms for a staff social with free pizza and soda (no Foxon Park, sorry). We happily snacked on many pies, including pepperoni, sausage, black olives & roasted red peppers, broccoli & sun-dried tomatoes, and spinach & garlic.
