When we recently polled the readers of Roadfood.com about their favorite clam dish, fried clams was the decisive winner over second place clam chowder.  Out of the 1152 people who voted, only five chose clam hash, no doubt because few people have ever had the good fortune to sample it.  As far as we know, the only restaurant that serves clam hash is Pat’s Kountry Kitchen (Roadfood.com review) in Old Saybrook, CT, where it is the house specialty.  If you ever find yourself in the vicinity of Pat’s at breakfast time, we urge you to get a plate, and ask for it cooked crisp.  Assuming you enjoy clams, you won’t regret it!

I missed the poll, but just wanted to thank Roadfood for turning me on to Sea Swirl in Mystic. It just happened that I was going to be in that area a week after the post. The clam belly dinner was by far the best fried clams I've had, and I lived in Maine for 18 years, so that's saying a lot.

I would love some Italian seafood dishes. Suppa de pesci, loaded with clams, lobster, mussles and what ever shell fish they could squeeze in. Here in SW Oh it just dont exist. You would have an eaiser time getting a meatball sub than any clam ishes around me.
Big Bellies? I worked in place in denver that got the big bellies in in 5lb tins. They were great, but id love fresh from the shell!

I love eating clams every possible way. However, the very best clam dish I ever had was, a bowl of "clams posillipo" at Garberino's in Valley Stream, New York. It was years ago but that dish is still my "benchmark" clam dish.
