Business at Western Massachusetts farm stands starts to pick up in late summer when the harvest of fresh corn arrives. But October means apples, cider, and pumpkins, and Westview Farms at 111 East Hill Road in Monson has the prettiest view over the Monson hills. People come in droves in the cool weather for hay rides and cider donuts, but the regulars know that Westview has fabulous homemade ice cream. Their top seller is Monson Mud (pictured above), a lip-smacking mocha base that’s laden with sprinkles, brownie bits, chocolate chips, waffle cone pieces, M & M’s, Oreos, and walnuts.
The adjoining restaurant offers hamburgers, hot dogs, fried seafood, pizza, and these hearty chili cheese fries:
After enjoying Westview’s ice cream, it’s hard to resist buying a few “animal cones” for 25¢ each:
Eager mouths of goats in a large pen are happy to eat as many cones as you give them:
Pumpkins are abundant and inexpensive, and customers may pick their own from Westview’s patch or rummage through tables full of them:
Fall decorating supplies are also for sale, such as corn stalks, hay bales, and colorful Indian corn:
And don't forget a take-out quart of Westview’s pumpkin ice cream, which is outstanding on hot apple pie:
