America's Top Ten Chilis

Says who?  Says Bon Appetit.  Sounds like a job for Jane and Michael Stern but this top-ten chili list was compiled by Andrew Knowlton.  Included on the list are longtime Roadfood favorites Ben's Chili Bowl of Washington, DC (Roadfood.com review; chili cheese fries pictured above), Camp Washington Chili of Cincinnati, OH (Roadfood.com review), and All Star Sandwich Bar of Cambridge, MA (Roadfood.com review).

The other seven: Joe Rogers' Original Recipe Chili Parlor of Springfield, IL ("63-year-old no-frills legend"), Chili My Soul of Encino, CA ("a roster of more than 30 varieties"), Slim's Last Chance in Seattle, WA ("Part chili shack, part music venue"), Daisy May's BBQ USA of New York, NY ("thick with braised cubes of beef"), Tomasita's of Santa Fe, NM ("one of the best places to try stew-like New Mexican green chili"), Tolbert's Restaurant in Grapevine, TX ("a classic bowl of Texas red"), and Big Bad Breakfast in Oxford, MS ("house-made chili on a griddle-fried hot dog atop a sweet waffle").

The New Mexico stuff isn't chili.... it's chile. There's a difference. Bon App should know that by now.

Cincinnati Chili is often ignored as great American diner cuisine.  Thanks for putting Camp Washington on the list.  Try Blue Ash Chili and Price Hill Chili for some other great options.

Thank you to CajunKing for suggesting Camp Washington when we visited Cincy!  Has anyone been to Big Bad Breakfast in Oxford, MS?  That dish with the waffle sounds sensational!

From Big Bad Breakfast's lunch menu (it sounds even better than Bon Appetit's description):

The Pylon: split, griddle-fried hot dog with chili, slaw, cheddar, mustard, chopped pickles, onion, jalapeño peppers and oyster crackers on a sweet waffle (we just pile it all on)………$9.00
It’s a hangover’s worst enemy…

I think some folks here in Charlotte might have something to say about the lack of Vic the Chili Man!  I'm just sayin.............. Smile
