Harold's New York Deli of Edison, New Jersey, has been brilliantly reviewed by Bruce Bilmes and Sue Boyle and highly rated by over 60 members of Roadfood.com. When Jane and I drove from Connecticut to Philadelphia the other day to record a segment of WHYY’s A Chef's Table on behalf of our new book, 500 Things to Eat Before It's Too Late (And The Very Best Places to Eat Them), the plan was to hold out for roast pork sandwiches and cheese steaks when we got to Philly. However, hunger beckoned halfway; so we stopped for a snack at Harold’s. Need I say more? The snack decimated all appetite. No complaints, though. As those who have eaten at Harold’s can attest, it isn’t just outlandish size that make’s Harold’s food memorable, it is deliciousness. That jumbo matzoh ball at the lower right (note the soda can to gauge its size) is one of the best anywhere, so light that the very weight of a spoon laid on top will cause the utensil’s edge to sink down through the fluffy, luxurious center. The egg cream above it is well-nigh perfect.
