Real Maple Syrup and Good Coffee

Give Roadfooders real maple syrup and a good cup of coffee at breakfast and they’ll be happy, according to the latest Roadfood.com poll that asked the following question: What Impresses You Most at a Breakfast Place?

We’re pretty fussy about coffee, and generally resign ourselves to looking for a good cup at a coffee shop AFTER breakfast.  It’s a rare treat when we find that good cup WITH breakfast.  Although we’re also annoying when it comes to maple syrup – we only keep the real thing around, which for years we used to order from the late Governor Thomson’s Mt. Cube Farm in New Hampshire, and today we get from Polly’s Pancake Parlor – surprisingly enough we can live with the fake stuff when we’re traveling.  Though we have toyed with the idea of traveling with little bottles of New Hampshire’s finest…

Ah- yes, but going to a good coffee shop, does not mean falling back on a Starbucks afterwards. Many other websites including Yelp, Citysearch, AOL and even the website for the local entertainment weekly will reveal the best coffeehouses for the area that you're in.

You are quite correct, wanderingjew, in principle.  We'll go to an independent coffee shop if we spot one but we don't generally search for them, probably because we actually like Starbucks.

Using the local alternative weekly (and the mainstream paper too) is a good idea but we haven't found Yelp/Citysearch/AOL to be at all reliable.  We rarely use those sources anymore, except for occasional cross-checking.

Bruce, I too rely on the local weeklies many will have an annual "best of"
section, coffeehouses are almost alwayws included and the nominations
are based on readers votes. In fact I've found more often than not
that many of the roadfood restaurants reviewed here end up on those
lists. I usually will put  weight on a Yelp, or similar
review is if there are a significant number of favorable reviews.

That's a good point - those annual "best of" issues that the alternative weeklies produce are good to check out before visiting a city.  They are usually available online, and often they'll have many years of "best of" available, too.
