Roadfood At the Movies

We saw the movie Up last night and noticed the appearance of Fenton’s Creamery of Oakland (Roadfood.com review) in the film.  This got us thinking: how many other Roadfood restaurants have shown up in films?  We quickly thought of three others.  Perhaps the most famous example is Katz’s (Roadfood.com review) and the film When Harry Met Sally (“I’ll have what she’s having.”).  The Carnegie Deli (Roadfood.com review) of New York was featured in the Woody Allen flick Broadway Danny Rose, and if we recall correctly, the late Leo Steiner, who owned the Carnegie at the time, was also in the movie.  And we recall reading somewhere that Phillips Grocery (Roadfood.com review) of Holly Springs, MS was in a Robert Altman film.  We didn’t see it – was it Cookie’s Fortune?

There must be plenty of additional examples but none come to mind.  Something in Philadelphia at a cheese steak joint?  A Texas barbecue spot?  Got to be something in L.A., right?  Can anybody think of other Roadfood movie appearances?

There are a bunch in Chicago: "Return to Me" was set almost entirely at Twin Anchors (known the movie as O'Reilly's Italian Restaurant), the late, lamented Nate's Deli was where Aretha Franklin belts out "(You Better) Think" in "The Blues Brothers," and Ken Raskin of Manny's told us that a fairly obscure Matt Dillon movie called "The Big Town" was filmed there, and while the crew was required to take lunch from studio-hired catering trucks, Dillon treated himself to a corned beef sandwich. While The Pump Room at the Ambassador Hotel isn't Roadfood, a veteran hostess there once told us that Alfred Hitchcock wanted to film a scene of Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint having dinner there for "North by Northwest" just so Hitch would have a good excuse to eat in the Pump Room all week.

Oh, and one more we DID see.  There was a Denzel Washington movie... I think Mississippi Masala.  Didn't they eat at that place... let me look it up on the site... yes, Lusco's!  With the private dining rooms.

One of the foulest movies ever made  - Untamed Heart Used my old stomping ground  Jim's Coffee Shop as the setting for dimwitted Marisa Tomai & crazy Baboon-hearted Christian Slater falling into dysfunctional stalker love.  They had damn fine hashbrowns. Smile

A fantastic movie by Jim Jarmusch called "Mystery Train" takes place at the Arcade Hotel in Memphis, with a number of scenes filmed in the amazing Arcade Restaurant across the street.  The Arcade also appears in a terrible film called "Elizabethtown".

There's a pretty dumb movie called 'Chasers' that has a scene set at the infamous Piggie Park in West Columbia, SC.

There have been numerous movies that had scenes that included Dirty Water Street Carts in NYC. Mostly "Cop" movies. Can't remember their names.
Also, food shops on the Santa Monica Boardwalk an "The Strip" in Venice Beach.

Thinking about Broadway Danny Rose, Woody's NY movies almost always feature at least one restaurant.  Off the top of my head, John's Pizza in "Manhattan"; Elaine's also in "Manhattan"; Gino's in "Mighty Aphrodite"; Dean and Deluca in "Husbands and Wives"; Pagaent Bar and Grill in "Hannah and Her Sisters"; and most recently Yonah Schimmel Knishes in "Whatever Works".  I'm sure there's tons more.
