World’s Best Mac & Cheese?

Posted by Michael Stern , February 05, 2010 09:39

Beecher's-mac-n-cheese

Beecher’s is a cheese shop at 100 Pike Place in Seattle, across the street from the covered market. It’s an aromatic storefront that makes and sells everything from fresh curds to flavored varieties that include No Woman (jerk spices and brown sugar) and Marco Polo (dotted with green and black peppercorns). I love eating on the stroll around the market, and Beecher’s mac & cheese, made with penne pasta and billed as the “world’s best,” is available in small containers with plastic forks for stand-up enjoyment. It’s mighty good, but is it the world’s best? I would love to do a side-by-side comparison with some of these contenders, going clockwise from the upper left: Rocky and Carlo's, Hell's Kitchen, Mary Mac's Tea Room, Zingerman's Roadhouse and Lynn's Paradise Cafe.

All of those look wonderful (especially the one from Hell's Kitchen), but I would also put what they serve at Gray Brother's Cafeteria on the short list of mac & cheese greats.

Cliff, I agree... but I don't have a good picture of Gray Bros' mac & cheese!

Be truthful, now.  Is there ANYTHING better than a good, home-made Mac & Cheese to comfort the soul (and belly) while awaiting yet another severe snow storm here in the Chesapeake Bay area?

Me thinks not.

We have dozens of thoughtfully-reviewed mac and cheese recipes on our blog, www.weheartmacandcheese.com. Try the one with cream cheese!

We've also reviewed Beecher's. It was tasty, but not our all time favorite.

Manny's has one similar to the upper left picture and is pretty good!

Well, it's certainly the freshest. Where else can you watch the Flagship cheese being made as you eat mac and cheese made with Flagship?

I have a vivid memory of a mac and cheese that a church lady made for me and my kids when my wife was in the hospital. Now I grew up with mac and cheese being mostly boxed or bulk cheese mixed with mac. This beautiful old lady presented me with a glass bread pan filled with mac and interspersed throughout were chunks of cheddar cheese and BUTTER! I was to bake this for some time...sorry thirty years ago and I can't remember.
I believe to this day it was the best mac and cheese I ever had and have yet been able to duplicAte it.
